Authenticating Email

What we've done!

On the server, we've turned off the open relay service that was running and changed it to authenticate only.

Why have we done this?

We've done this because have the server was set to open relay, meaning that it is possible for other people to send email from our server. As a security measure we have turned this option off.

How does it impact you?

It means that you have to have ammend your email account. For example if your email is, info@somedomain.com and your password was abc123, then you can only use our mail server to send emails. If you have info@virgin.com and password xyz987 and tried to send mail using our server it would send you 503 error mail, saying it can't be authenticated.

To turn this option on in either outlook or outlook express, you would normally navigate to tools, and internet accounts. Once you have selected your account, move towards the advanced settings where you will see a security tab, it is around here, depending on your version, where you will find the authenicate option.

There are many articles on the web showing you how to do this. I have dropped some screen grabs below and there is a detailed article on how to change email settings here: Atlantic Email Settings doc
